Led by new 5A state champion Colleen Stegmann of Reedy High School, Frisco ISD runners finished strong Saturday at the UIL 5A State Cross Country Championship in Round Rock.

Stegmann’s state title helped Reedy finish fourth in the team standings, while the Wakeland girls finished 12th. Reedy also had FISD’s top boys individual and team finisher, with Wyatt Wingard finishing 12th overall to lead the Lions to ninth in the team standings.

Stegmann, who finished ninth as a freshman and third as a sophomore at the state meet, was in third place after the first mile. By the end of the second mile she had taken the lead, and from there, the junior expanded her lead down the stretch and finished the 5K course at Old Settlers Park in 17 minutes and 7.3 seconds. She finished eight seconds ahead of the second-place runner.

“I’m just so thankful to be here,” Stegmann said after the race. It’s a little surreal. It’s been a long journey.”

Stegmann’s teammate Zoe Calyer finished 32nd overall, and three more Reedy girls runners were in the top 100: Elizabeth Oh (68th), Alyssa Howe (76th) and Madison Lopez (87th). They pushed Reedy to its highest finish in the school’s short history.

“I’m so proud of them,” Stegmann said.
