Reedy opened a big lead over Liberty and then held on for a 35-27 victory Friday in the season opener for both teams at the Ford Center.

Reedy quarterback A.J. Padgett threw two of his three touchdown passes in the first half as Reedy opened up a 28-0 lead over Liberty. Jacob Smith and Zion Washington each also rushed for a touchdown as the Lions, who this year hope to make the playoffs for the fourth straight year, were in total control until late in the first half.

Liberty rallied for a touchdown before halftime and scored again in the third quarter before Padgett connected with Kaleb Smith for a 6-yard touchdown that gave Reedy a 35-14 lead.

Liberty cut Reedy's lead to 35-27 and then recovered an onside kick with about three minutes left. But the Reedy defense came through by stopping Liberty on its final drive.

Reedy next plays Frisco on Thursday at the Ford Center.
