In the opening week of the playoffs, the Reedy football team earned the Lions’ first football playoff win in the school’s short history. But each week, Reedy is showing that it can do more than just take a few steps forward in its third varsity season.

Reedy rolled over another opponent on Friday night, this time beating a Burleson Centennial team that had entered the game with only one loss. Reedy took control early, and after the game was delayed by weather for more than an hour in the third quarter, the Lions finished off a 34-7 victory over Centennial at Southlake’s Dragon Stadium.

Reedy improved to 13-0 on the season and advanced to the 5A Division II state quarterfinals. It will face Aledo, which is also 13-0 and has won six state titles in the last nine seasons, on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Pennington Field in Bedford.

Reedy is the final Frisco ISD football team to be playing this season. Lone Star finished its season on Saturday with a 31-13 loss to Tyler John Tyler in the 5A Division I bracket. Lone Star finished with a 10-3 record, giving it four straight seasons with at least 10 wins.

The matchup with Aledo will be quite a challenge for Reedy, but the Lions have been rolling in the playoffs. After Centennial cut Reedy’s lead to 20-7 in the third quarter, the Lions made sure the score didn’t get tighter when the game resumed after a lightning delay. Reedy’s defense forced Centennial to punt on its next two possessions while the Reedy offense reached the end zone on back-to-back drives.

That pushed the lead back to four touchdowns, and the faithful Reedy fans who waited out the weather delay could begin making plans for another playoff round.

“It’s a dream come true for these kids,” Reedy coach Chad Cole said, “and I’m really happy for them.”

Reedy outgained Centennial 400-121 in the game, led by a rushing attack that piled up 276 yards. Running back Michael Ferrara carried the ball 24 times for 136 yards, and the Reedy defense held Centennial to only 36 yards rushing. The Reedy defense also recovered three fumbles and intercepted a pass.
